    Old English

    Invading tribes(Angles-Saxons-Juters) spoke similarly.
    Old English didn't sound like or resemble English nowadays.

    Middle English (1100-1500)

    Norman Invasion in 1066 brought about a linguistic class division:
    a. Upper Classes spoke French
    b.Lower Classes spoke German
    c. Monks & Scholars spoke Latin
  • Period: 1500 to

    Early Modern English ( 1500-1800)

    a. The Great Vowel Shift (vowels pronounced shorter and shorter)
    b.Invention of printing-Standardisation of the English language/Fixation of grammar and spelling/Publication of the first dictionary
  • Period: to

    Late Modern English (1800-now)

    More words created due to the Industrial Revolution & expansion of the British Empire.
