Advent of the Stereoscope

A divise that took two images and with mirrors put them at such an angle that you could place your eyes between the two mirrors and get a stereoscopic veiw. Stereoscopic images are images than are very similar to each other but the left eye and the right eye see subtle diffrences in depth which mirrors (pun intended) how we naturally see the world. All of this gives the illusion of 3D -
First showing of an anaglph 3d movie
LinkEdwin S. Porter and William E. Waddel's 3d movie at the Astor Theatre in New York City. Anaglph films work by having two cameras that each record a seprate veiw like how our eyes have two separate veiws. Each camera then records in a diffrent color, green or redish pink. That way when you wear special glasses only the intended image contrasts against the color of the glass. Your brain then stitches these two veiws together to make the illusion if 3D. -
First 3d polarized film
Wiki link Andy Warhol's Frankenstein used a similar method to anaglyph but instead of using two separate colors it used polarised light. This is the most common method of large scale 3D in movie theaters. These glasses look grey and semi-transparent. Which is true because they are only transparent to a certian kind of light which is selectivly emited from the two projectors needed to make 3d films. -
Virtual Boy
Wiki linkNintendo released its Virtual Boy which was the first video game stereoscopic device but it failed because of it's mind numing red monochrome screen that gave people headaches. It works by having two screens, one for the right and one for the left, that protray a scene in a video game. The headset was glued to one place and one veiw and better 3d results could be acheived at home with anaglyph 3d. -
The first oculus rift
wiki linkThe first oculus rift was like ski goggles that attached to your head with two small screens inside like the virtual boy. The screen were far better resolution so more complex games and movies could be displayed. As well the deivice was the first headset to have full color instead of just dull red. Also this device was conected to a PC allowing for a much wider range of content. This has inspired many companys to start making their own headsets so many copies of this product exist. -
htc vive
Htc vive website The htc vive is another headset with two screen. In order to beat oculus the htc vive has two fully tracked controllers that are used to be a part of the game and use your hands instead of being an outside observer. It has two tracking cameras so you can move around inside the game or movie and pear around corners or crouch down to inspect something. The resolution has also increased so it's less likely you know your looking at a screen.
