The History of Public Education in the U.S.

  • Old Deluder Satan Act

    The Act required that a town containing 50 or more people had to hire a primary school teacher. A town that held 100 or more people needed to hire a Latin teacher as well.
  • Common Schools

    Common schools made education more uniform and tried to teach morals instead of religion.
  • School Commitees Formed

    The Massachusetts Great and General Court passed a law requiring all towns to elect a school commitee to run the town schools.
  • Troy Academy

    Troy Academy was founded by Emma Hart Willard. Her curriculum, used in Troy Academy, was th basis for the curriculum for the first public high school for girls, established in Boston and New York City.
  • First Egg-Crate School Built

    The Boston Quincy School was the first "egg-crate" school built, which consisted of seperate rooms for different ages of students.
  • School Lunch for All

    School lunches were provided for all students, even those who could not afford them.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Oliver Brown fought for the rights of his daughter to go to a nearby "white school" than having to walk further to a "black school".
  • Programmed Instruction

    Allowed students to work at their own pace.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act. of 1965

    This Act created the Head Start and Title 1 programs for Special Education.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    This Act helped schools financially, including buying text books, and helped prepare teachers.
  • Equally Education opportunity Act

    This Act enforced all staff and students to be treated eually.
