    Alexander Graham Bell created the first ever working telephone in 1876. The idea came to him as he was making plans to help deaf people see sound in a graphical way. "What if you could create an electric current that varies to the intensity of the air as sound is produced." This invention was the telephone which he tested in his lab with the famous words "Mr. Watson, come here; I want you.” This simple phrase led to a new age of communication one envisioned since the telegraphs creation.

    The transcontinental phone was an improvement over the liquid phone that Bell had created as it was able to call over a special type of vaccum wires that isolated the sounds allowing it to travel across the continent. Higginsons improvement on the telephone were sponsered by AT&T and they became the first carrier to offer the telephone as a commercial product. This change led to the telephone becoming a public phenomenon and a staple of American society.
