The History of HTML

By Sarem
  • Tim Berners-Lee

    Tim Berners-Lee
Tim Berners-Lee, a man who worked at CERN, created the Web using HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) as the publishing language. He had the idea of linking and pooling all information together and that was what brought us the World Wide Web.

  • Mosaic Browser

This Browser was made to help out with the features that Tim was going to make such as images and forms. Later on, engineers realized that it was actually very poorly made.
    RESOURCE
  • HTML 2.0

There were many browsers who edited their HTML because it was too broad and harder to manage. As a response, Tim and his colleagues worked to release a more defined HTML, which they called HTML 2.0. It was essentially the same, except, with more details.
    RESOURCE
  • Netscape

Marc Andreessen hated the Mosaic project so much that he left and started on a new browser called,
Netscape. It was very successful and it began making its own HTML tags and it shook the WWW community.
    RESOURCE
  • The World Wide Web Consortium

This consortium was created in order to bring all of the greatest technological minds together to work on the HTML and creating guidelines and protocols to help the long-term growth of the web.
It turned out to be a great success considering that it still exists today.
    RESOURCE
  • HTML 3.0

Dave Raggett and his team created HTML 3.0 which made images so much easier to manage,
but the IETF was not ecstatic about it and in reality it never really became a published HTML.
    RESOURCE
  • Internet Explorer

    Internet Explorer
Microsoft finally released the first version of the Internet Explorer browser. This browser used its own HTML and was the first real competitor for Netscape.
Both companies kept updating their HTML and adding plugins.RESOURCE
  • End of HTML Working Group

The IETF HTML group just couldn't keep up with the fast growing demand and expectations anymore thata they had to completely end the whole group.RESOURCE
  • ERB HTML

ERB (Editorial Review Board) HTML was a meeting of representatives from IBM, Microsoft, Netscape, and many other large companies. It ended up being the new IETF HTML and they worked together on many projects. RESOURCE
  • HTML 3.2

W3 Consortium created HTML 3.2 which was basically took the IETF HTML and incorporated it into HTML+ and HTML 3.0. It had the same features as the Cougar project but with more features such as text flow around images. RESOURCE
  • Cougar

The HTML ERB became the new working group,
so they started working on this project called Cougar. This project ended up being HTML 4.0. It contained all the capabilities of HTML 3.2 in addition to several new key features. RESOURCE
  • HTML 5.0

HTML 4 was used for about 10 years before HTML 5 came out.
HTML 5 was created to make things more simple and clear for the creators and users. You can now use multimedia elements such as videos and web servers and clients can communicate via web sockets.
