    Of all the people coming to America throughout this time period, the English were the most densely populated, and had the biggest influence on North America's education system. English settlers established communities, common values, and introduced the importance of receiving an education to all the settlers that were living in America during this time period.

  • Women Become Teachers

    Women Become Teachers
    Before the 1830s through the 1840s, teaching was only a male's profession. The first teaching jobs that women had were in "dame schools" and they were schools that took place in the family home, and taught the youngest children. A woman did not hsve to be very educated to teach at this time, but the dame schools were proof that women did indeed have the ability to teach.

    Brown VS. Board of Education
    In Brown v. Board of Education, African American children were finally allowed to enroll in public schools that were previously only educating white children. This was a huge step in the history of education and is known to be one of the greatest supreme court decisions of the 20th century. The decision made by the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation of children in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act passed in 1975, and was amended several times after that. This act allowed students with any type of disability to receive a fair, equal, and applicable education.

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The main focus of No Child Left Behind Act was to close student performance gaps by making sure that all children have access to an equal opportunity to receive a genuine, and superb education. No Child Left Behind calls for each individual state to determine their own academic standards, and a state testing scheme, that meets federal requirements and demands.
