This stage centers on the infant's basic needs being met by the parents and this interaction leading to trust or mistrust. If the parents do not give a secure enviornment and meet the child's basic needs the child will mistrust the parents.

    Little infant Kaia Ann is just 4 months old. After living in the warm and safe belly of her mother, she wasn't sure if she could make this new transition into this new world. Sometimes she becomes hungry, cold, hot, or lonely. This usually was not often because her parents were always watching after her to make sure she was fed, not too hot, and not too cold. At this stage, a child feels that they need to win approval by showing that they can do things that are valued by society. When they do this, they begin to develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments. If they fail to achieve these skills then this may cause the child to doubt his or her future and lead to inferiority.

    Washington. This is Erikson's fourth stage of identity versus role confusion. This stage occurs between the ages of 12-18. They need to develop a sense of self and identity. To do this, teens may experiment with different roles, activities, and behaviors. Teens who get encouragement and reinforcement will have a strong sense of self and a feeling of independence. Those who are unsure of their beliefs and desires will be insecure and confused about themselves and their future,

    Kaia Ann just turned 40 years old. She is happily married to a man she meet 20 years ago in college. They both have great jobs. She is an Environmental Engineer and he is an editor at a publishing company. Their twins just turned 12; both are boys. Kaia Ann feels fulfilled as a mother, wife, and in her career. Kaia Ann and her husband even give time at their local Boys and Girls Club and church. She creates technology to help make less carbon footprints, she works hard to raise her boys right,

    she loves her husband more every day, and she has a strong relationship with God. She feels she is making a difference in the world. This is Erikson's 7th stage of generativity versus stagnation. When a person makes a contribution to life during this stage they get a sense of productivity and accomplishment. If a person does not do this, they will get a feeling of stagnation. This means that they will get dissatisfaction of the lack of productivity in their life.
