The Hawaiian Renaissance

    The resurgance of the Hawaiian culture was a movement led by Prince Kuhio. Through the homesteding scheme he wanted to rehibilitate Hawaiians.

    1930's
    George Mossman tried to stir interest about preserving and maintaining Hawaiian tradiotions. He tried to generate public interest Hawaiian culture, especially language, chants, and Hula.

    From 1939-1945.
    People were more occupied with the political, economic changes. Hawaiian identity took a back seat.
  • 1960's

    1960's
    Hawaiians as individuals and groups started showing increaed concern for their political rights, greivences, and cultural identity.

    John Dominis Holt's published a book called "On being Hawaiian". This book is very important. It was probably the establishment of the state council of Hawaiian heritage because it was the first time the state of Hawaii recognized the value of perpetuating the culture this way.

    The Merrie Monarch Ferstival established by George Na'ope caused resurgence in the study and practice of acient hula.

    The Reniassance bloomed and attained the influence it has today.

    The Hawaiian Music Foundation was established to perpetuate Hawaiian music. This was a reniassance organization.

    Honolulu adopted a county ordinance. Every new street on Oahu had to be given a Hawaiian name.

    Started public, Hawaiian language, immersion pre-schools. Other immersion schools soon followed.
