The Puritan wanted their children to be able to read both the bible and understand the laws of the town, they didn't believe the parents could teach the children so they passed a law that every town of fifty should have an elementary school and every town of 00 should have a Latin school.

The first high school in the U.S was called The English Classical School but was renamed to The English high school located in Boston. It was an all boys school to prepared them for business, mechanics or engineering offering courses like English, navigation, geography and many more.

In 1827 Massachusetts passed a law making all grades of public schools open to all students free of charge. Also for Towns containing 500 or more families they will also have the opportunity to go to a public high school free of charge for both female and male. It was a start to free education for all.

Horace Mann was the head of the newly formed State Board of Education. He was passionate about education and believed everyone was entitled to free education. Horace Mann also believed that teacher training was Important and in order to received a good education it had to start with teacher training. He came up with a journal for teachers on lectures. He was very well known on making a huge impact in education.

Plessy v. Ferguson was a United State Supreme Court case that ruled segregation was legal and was allowed under the 14th Amendment. One thing they required was that separated but equal facilities were provided for both races even though at that time nothing was equally in a black only school when it came to teacher salaries or schools supplies compared to an all white school.

After realizing that separate but equal wasn't working out due to All blacks school were still not seeing the equality. They brought the issue back to court and after the second hearing Gov Earl Warren concluded that separate but equal has no room in education and will proceed with eliminating racial segregation in schools.

On June 23 congress passed a law ending sex discrimination in any education program or activity who receives federal financial assistance. Including athletics which meant woman will get the same resources as a male athletics including scholarships. Since then more woman have joined school sports team and have been given the same opportunities.

In order to make the life of children with disability easier congress came up with The Education for all Handicapped Act. It's an act to guarantee that special education services are available for every student in need and to help make decisions in regards to the child's disability also to provide federal funds to every state in order to help students with disabilities.

California added prop 187 on their ballet to help them decide if they should make it illegal for children of undocumented immigrants to attend public school. They are depending on the state to make the decision based on their vote. On November 8th of 1994 59% of California voted yes to denying public services to illegal immigrants living in the U.S including not being able to attend a public school. Sounds a lot like what we are living today

In 2002 President George W Bush signed into place a law by the name of No Child Left Behind, It was a law to provide equal educational opportunities to every student regardless if the students has any special education service, speaks little to no English or even comes from a low income family. The state would provide funds if the school was meeting the numbers every year, they would measure them by having students take a yearly test.

President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act in 2015. After carefully getting the input of parents, teachers and students the Obama administration came up with a new act to work better with schools and educators. The goal is to get every student prepared for success in college and careers, and for all students to be taught in a high academic standard. ESSA is very similar to NCLB the small differences is preschool is now included and more flexibility with how numbers are measured.
