  • Jeanette Catches Fire

    While Jeanette (who is four years old) is cooking hotdogs her favorite pink tutu dress catches on fire and she is rushed to the hospital.
  • Move to Midland, California

    The Walls family moves to Midland, California. On the way Jeanette's mother sees a tree that is twisted and insists that she paint it, explaining to Jeanette that its struggles to survive are what makes it beautiful.
  • Another Move, Police Car Chase

    Rex manages to out run a police car, afraid that the police man would recognise his plates. They rent a moving truck and he has the kids ride in the back.
  • Rex Loses his Job

    Rex loses his job and the family starts to starve. Rex and Mary start to fight and Mary starts work as a teacher, but hates it.
  • Back to Pheonix

    Jeanette's grandmother dies leaving them her money and house. The family moves back to Pheonix where the kids get new stuff, like bicycles and glasses.
  • Cold Turkey

    Jeanette asks her father to quit drinking and he stops cold turkey, however he starts drinking again after a year.
  • Grandma's House

    The family moves in with Rex's parents. They make the kids sleeping the basement on a single bed. Erna, their grandmother, tries to molest Brian, but is stopped by Jeanette.
  • Life Gets Harder

    Parents come back from Pheonix claming a robery. the kids are kicked out because of the incident with Brian. The end up in a rundown house with leaky plumbing. Rex leaves for days at a time and food is in short supply.
  • A Cold Winter

    The house they are in has no insulation, so they have to sleep with the recently adopted dogs. Trying to burn wood or coal didn't help much and the family had to melt snow for water. Erna died and Lori sung "Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead" at her funeral, sending Rex into a drinking spree.
  • New York

    Jeanette moves to New York, soon followed by Brian and Maureen. She works at a newspaper and goes to collage through grants and loans.
