    Pathway to American FootballThe earliest reference to a game of football involving players passing the ball forward and attempting to score past a goalkeeper was written in 1633 by David Wedderburn, a poet and teacher in Aberdeen, Scotland.

    The game was played by the Universiy of Rutgers and Princeton University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. It is vey likely that they were playing with rules like the current soccer game is played. 6-4 was the final score in favor of Rutgers.

  • Rugby is inroduced

    Rugby is introduced to American eyes in a match played by Harvard University football team and McGill University in Montreal. The rules were mixed to resemble harvards own football rules with rugby rules.

    The Father of FootballWalter Camp was a Collegiate football coach at Yale where he sat on various rules committees. It is believed that he has made the most contributions to the current college football rule system.
  • President Roosevelt Threatens

    Roosevelt ThreatensAmerican football, in its early years, was an excessively violent game, plagued with several deaths and life-changing injuries every year. The violence became so drastic that President Theodore Roosevelt threatened to shut down the game in 1905, should rules not be changed to minimize this violence.

    In this year the BCS Title game becomes an entity of itself adding an additional game to the mix rtaher than the previous rotationing schedule of the 4 BCS bowls.
