In the book Hazel goes to support group because her mother thinks that she is depressed and needs to get out of the house and go live her life. -
Hazel meets Gus
When Hazel got out of the car and was walking into support group, she looked over and saw a boy staring at her. Hazel thinks that the boy is hot, but she is too afraid to talk to him. So she does the only reasonable thing a teenage girl could do… She stares at him the whole time and they play a round of the staring game. -
Hazel goes to Augustus's house
Hazel and Gus become friends in the support group and Gus invites Hazel over to hang out afterward. The two of them go back to his house and when they get there Hazel meets his parents and they watch a movie on the couch because his parents won't let them watch it in the basement. -
Augustus reads An Imperial Affliction.
One of the most important things that happens in the book is when Gus reads An Imperial Affliction. The reason that this is one of the most important parts of the book is because Gus falls in love with the book, just as Hazel did and they bond over the book. -
Augustus and Hazel e-mail Peter Van Houten
Because Gus fell in love with An Imperial Affliction and the book ended on a serious cliffhanger Gus decided to write Peter Van Houten about the book. After Gus writes a letter, Hazel decides to do the same thing just incase this is the one time that he may write back or read his letter. -
Peter Van Houten replies.
After Gus and Hazel lose all hope on their letters They get a reply, when the receive it they are amazed. Once they read the email they decided that they want to go and meet him so they go to the board of the Make a Wish foundation to see if they could go together. -
Augustus uses his wish
Augustus decides to use the wish to go meet Peter Van Houten with Hazel. Hazel doesn’t want Augustus to use his cancer wish (ironic name) on her, but he explains that he isn’t using it on her, he’s using it on them. This further pushes the two together (emotionally and physically) -
They fly to Amsterdam.
Hazel and Gus fly to Amsterdam and on the plane they watch a movie together. -
Hazel and Augustus find out the truth about Peter Van Houten
Hazel and Augustus to meet Peter Van Houten, and they were eager to hear his response to their email. After knocking on Peter’s door, he opens it, closes it, then has a long and angry conversation with his assistant Lidewij. The two hear it and deduce that the author had no intention of explaining the end of the book and he didn't know that they were going to come to his doorstep. When questioned about the ending of the book, avoids the topic and insults the two kids. He says they are two pitie -
Augustus tells Hazel about his cancer
While Hazel was in the Hospital, Augustus discovered he had tumors all throughout his body and his cancer is back. He says that his cancer gets worse everyday, causing him pain, and the doctors have given him a small amount of time to live. He says that he has started his treatment and plans to start a new experimental treatment once he gets home. After delivering this shocking news, Augustus breaks down and starts to release all of his emotions to Hazel. -
They fly back home
After a stressful journey in Amsterdam they go back home and deal with everything that has happened. -
Augustus dies
After many weeks of Augustus’ condition getting worse and worse, he finally died. -
Hazel reads Augustus's letter
Before Gus died he wrote Hazel a letter, and it was meant to be the letter that Hazel never got from Peter Van Houten.
