The events of the novel "Long Walk"

    In the story a sixteen year-old boy name Ray Garraty arrives at the starting line of a competition known as the Long Walk. Once there he befriends other participants known as walkers. A lttle while later "The Major" who is the orchestrator of race, wishes good luck to all the walkers and at 9:00 the walk begins
  • Conflict

    Conflict
    The rules of the Long Walk are simple:contestants must maintain a speed of at least four miles. If they drop below this speed for thirty seconds they recieve a warning and are also warned if the try to impede the progress of another walker. They get only three warnings and another warning will result in a "ticket". A boy named Curley is the first to recive a ticket and is killed instantly. This sets the stage for the walk as being a game of life or death.
  • Rising Action

    Rising Action
    Many Walkers have "bought their ticket" after the first 24 hours. Ray Garraty struggles to keep walking but makes a promise to himself that he would make to see his girlfriend Jan in Freeport, Maine. Also during the walk he questions many things around him such as why he joined the contest and his own mortality.
  • Turning Point

    Turning Point
    After seeing Jan at Freeport and managing to outlast nearly all the walkers only he and a boy named Stebbins remain. Prior to the final moments of the Walk, Stebbins had long mystified Garraty because of his endurance and his intellectual superiority. Seeing that he can no longer go on he decides to call it quits. However, as he is about to do so, Stebbins falls down and dies.
  • Falling Action

    Falling Action
    Garraty is the lone survivor of the long "Long Walk." With Stebbins laying on the ground the crowd erupts with violent cheers and applause. However he does not play attention to the crowd. He continues walking.
  • Resolution

    Resolution
    As Ray Garrety continues to walk , The Major rolls on over in his jeep to congratulate him and grant him the "prize". The prize is anything that he wants, any wish. But he does not stop for he sees a shadowly figure up ahead assuming it is a fellow walker. Then suddenly he has the strength to run.
