Trust vs. mistrust : 0 - 18 months
two months old Farrah is crying at 3:00 am in her separate room, her mom takes a few minutes to be woken from the baby monitor, takes another few minutes to reach her in her room to feed her. in this time, Farrah is still crying in her crib, and according to Erikson in this time baby Farrah is learning to trust her caregiver to provide when needed. -
Autonomy vs. Shame/Doubt
2-year-old Farrah is being dressed to get ready to leave the house. she is adamant about putting on her favorite purple shoes, but they are dirty and do not match the rest of her outfit, so her mom doesn't let her wear the shoes she wants. according to Erikson, she might experience shame or doubt about making her own choices -
Initiative vs. guilt
4-year-old Farrah wants to surprise her mother by pouring a glass of orange juice by herself for the first time and taking it to her mom to drink. Farrah succeeds at filling the glass, however, she makes a mess in the kitchen. her mom is delighted by the surprising glass of orange juice but tells her to clean up the mess, and asks for help next time. according to Erikson Farrah might feel accomplished, or guilty for making a mess and not being trusted with pouring juice on her own.
