The novel begins as The Pharaon docks in Edmond's home land. Tragedy has struck as the ship's captain, Captain Leclere, has passed away, and Dantès is next in line to be captain. He is eager to take leave and go visit his father and fiancée, who is soon to be his wife. This arouses jealousy in his shipmate and his competition for Mercedes', his fiancée's, heart.
