The Civil War

  • The Underground Railroads

    The Underground Railroad took place in the late 1700's and early 1800's. It was a system for slaves to run away. People that were involved with the Underground Railroad were John Farfield and Harriett Tubman. It took place in Ohio through Cananda. This system was a way for slaves to escape to freedom. This was very important to the slaves. It meant freedom and no more suffering. It was a major turning point in the Civil War and has been remembered for hundreds of years.
  • Invention of the Cotton Gin

    Eli Whitney created the Cotton Gin in October of 1793. He sent a drawing of it to Thomas Jefferson in order to recieve a patent. Jefferson replied on November 16 and the Whitney redesigned it. It is said that it was created in him own home. In February of the next year it was completed. He recieved the patent for the Cotton Gin on March 14, 1794. It was an important turning point in history because it created an easier way of making cloth out of cotton. It made a mark in American History.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was created on March 3rd, 1820. It took place in Missouri. It dealed with the issue of slavery in the new territories that were created after the Lousiana Purchase. Congress said that the amendment would not be allow slavery in Missouri. It was a 2 part compromise. It said that there was an imaginary line was drawn at 36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude. It stated that land north of the compromise line is free. This was an important event because it gave people freedom.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    It was after the Mexican-American War, when President James Polk requested 2 million dollars from congress. He wanted to buy a peace treaty from Mexico. David Wilmot attached a "rider" to the billon August 8th, 1846. He was a Democrat from Pennsylvania. The Wilmot Proviso forbid the spread of slavery from areas claimed from Mexico. The Wimot Proviso was never accepted by Congress. When Lincoln became president he followed the same principles in the Wilmot Proviso.
  • Uncle Tom’s Cabin

    In March of 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Toms Cabin. The novel was against slavery. She wrote the novel after having encounters with fugitive slaves from the Underground Railroad. In 1863, slavery was abolished and Stowe was very excited. This event was important because it helped to make people realize how slaves were really treated. Slavery was an issue that needed to be ended. When Lincoln finally put an end to slavery, Stowe died a few years later.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Decision took place in Missouri and Wisconsin. Dred Scott was carried by his master to different locations that had different laws and freedoms for "slaves". One was a free slave and one was a slave state. The decision by the Supreme Court was that he had no rights so he could not be named as free. This event was important in the Civil War because it showed how unjust the government is. A man was taken to a free state, so he should be considered free.
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    The debates began on August 27th, 1858 in 7 differnet locations throughout Illinois. These debates were between Stephan Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. Stephan Douglas was a Democrat who helped creat the Compromise of 1850. Stephan Douglas was also a proponent of Popular Sovereignty helped to create the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Lincoln did not agree with Douglas, which is where the debtates rooted from. As a reult of the debate came the Freeport Doctrine.Fifteen tbhousand people attended this debate.
  • Election of 1860

    The election of 1860 was between Lincoln and Douglas. Douglas was a democrat and Lincoln was a republican. Lincoln won the election because of his charming knowledge. Lincoln recieved the majority of the electoral college votes also. This election is important in history because all presdients brought something good to the table. Each President is important in their own little way. It definitely was a turning point in American history, because a new man is now going to lead our country.
  • Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter took place in South Carolina between the North and the South. This battle only lasted from April 12th to April 13th. Major Anderson was the commander at Fort Sumter. He gave President Lincoln a message that Fort Sumter had a certain amount of time left. Lincoln responded but he reponse was never recieved. Anderson refused to surrender, so this is what causes the battle. It is important becuase it was the first battle in the Civil War.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    The First Battle of Bull Run occured on July 21, 1861. It was between the Union and Confederate armies. Their battle took place in Manassas Junction, Virginia. This battle was the first major battle of the Civil War. It included about 35,000 Union troops an 20,000 Confederates. This battle was a victory for the South (Confederates). This battle is important to history because it was the first battle of the civil war. This battle is what started all the fighting and anger.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863. It was made right before the start of the third year of the Civil War. It said that all slaves were free. Slavery was very important to abolitionists. The Proclamation only applied to the seceeded states. This was an important document because it made a difference in making the future for slaves brighter. It was a turning point that contributed to human rights. Lincoln wanted to make a better world.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    This battle took place on July 1st, 1863. It lasted for 3 days, and ended on July 3rd. It happened in Gettysburg. General Robert E. Lee's Army and the Union Army fought each other. Gettysburg ranks one of the top battles of the Civil War. It was an ultimate victory for North. This battle made more men die and fight then any other battle in the war. This battle is an important turning point in american history because it shows how dedicated men can be in order to win.
  • Gettysburg address

    The Gettysburg Address was given in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was given by Abraham Lincoln. It was not even considered important when it was being given to the audience. It is important because it is the most quoted speech in History. The main idea of the Address was to express the equality of all men. Lincoln wanted to get the point across that the country was made with equality in mind. Our founding fathers did not want people treated differently. Peoples rights are very important.
  • Assasination of Abraham Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln was murdered by John Wilkes Booth in a theater on April 14th, 1865. Lincoln was enjoying a quiet night out with his wife, when Booth entered his room at the theater and shot him in the head. It occured in Washington, DC. This event became a turning point in American history because we as americans realized how presicous life is and even a political figure can be killed. The assasination of Abraham Lincoln was important because one of our presidents were killed.
