  • First Battle at Bull Run

     First Battle at Bull Run
    On July 21st, 1861 the Battle of Bull Run began with both sides holding an equal number of men. The Confederates broke the Union line and managed to acquire a victory. However they were extremely disorganized and could not press their advantage and pursue the retreating Yankees. The battle ended a day later on July 22nd, 1861.
  • Battle at Shiloh

    Battle at Shiloh
    The battle of Shiloh also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was the second great engagement of the American Civil War. Beginning on April 6th, 1862 Confederate generals launched a surprise attack on Ulysses S. Grants in Tennessee. Neither side was experienced enough to handle the battle. Both sides declared victory for their side ending the battle the next day on April 7th, 1862.
  • Battle of Hampton Roads

    Battle of Hampton Roads
    The Hampton Roads battle started on March 9th, 1862. This battle consisted of Monitor and Merrimack (CSS VIR). It was one of the only naval battles in the Civil War. Both crews were very inexperienced, so firing the cannons and operating other equipment was not very effective. On May 9th 1862, the Union navy won ending the battle.

    On September 17, 1862, the Confederates and Union soldiers battled near Antietam creek in Sharpsburg, Maryland. This was the first battle of the American Civil War to be fought on northern soil. Most of the fighting was bloody intense head on fighting. On September 18, suffering 10,318 casualties the battle was resolved ending in a Union victory.

    The battle of Fredericksburg began on December 11th 1862. 12,000 Union troops outnumber the 5,000 Confederate troops. Even though they were extremely outnumbered the Confederates pulled a remarkable victory. It ended December 13th 1862.

    The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought on April 30th, 1863. This battle was thought to be General Robert E. Lee's greatest victory during the Civil War. It was a confederate victory thanks to him. The battle finally ended on May 6th, 1863.

    The battle of Gettysburg started on July 1st,1863. The battle lasted for 3 days and ended on July 3rd, 1863. The battle was an amazing defeat for the confederacy. 23,000 Union soldiers were lost, however the confederates lost 28,000 soldiers. The confederacy lost all hope for help from the foreign countries because of the Unions victory.

    In early spring of 1862 Union forces tried take the Confederate hold on Vicksburg, Mississippi. However after losing Fort Henry Vicksburg became the only defense the confederates had. After the battle, Vicksburg’s leader, General John C. Pemberton surrendered on July 4th 1863.

    The battle of Chickamauga began on September 19th, 1863. Ten Confederate generals had been killed or wounded in this battle. Repeated attempts and efforts for the Union earned them the reputation the "Rock of Chickamauga". It ended the next day, September 20th, 1863.

    The Battle of the Wilderness began in the morning of May 5th, 1864. The battle lasted only two days but was ended inconclusively. The Union Army suffered the loss of 17,500 soldiers and Confederates lost 7,000 less. Even with the grand losses of the men, General Ulysses S. Grant refused to retreat, because he would not give up his army's advance. The battle ended on the 7th of May.

    The battle of Spotsylvania began on May 8th, 1864. The battle lasted for 13 days and ended on May 21st, 1864. This battle was some of the bloodiest fighting of the Civil War. There were 18,000 Union soldiers and 11,000 Confederate soldiers that were killed during this time period.The Confederacy had a victory upon the Union at Harris Farm.

    On September 2nd, 1864, after losing the battle at Atlanta the Confederates attacked the Union in Tennessee and Alabama. 60,000 men from the Union met up with the Confederates in Nashville. In April, 1865 the Confederated surrendered. The war was officially over on December 21st, 1864.

    In 1861 the Union claimed possession of all U.S. forts and arsenals within their territory. Fort Sumter was one of two forts that remained under federal jurisdiction. It was of no use but was still attacked. The Confederates withstood the attack from July 1863 to February 1865. However the fort was destroyed completely.

    On June 9, 1864 the Union army began a siege of the two cities. The battle continued on for 9 long months and finally ended on until March 25th, 1865. The Siege of Petersburg foreshadowed the trench warfare that was used in World War I, earning it a position in military history.
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    Lincoln's Assassination
    Abraham Lincoln was shoot on April 14th, 1865. He passed away the next day. John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s killer snuck into a private box where Lincoln was sitting with his wife, and shot him into the back of the head. He was taken to a house where a surgeon general arrived telling everyone that there was no hope and that he would die.
