    election of 1860 The south warned that if abolishionist Abraham Lincoln won this election then they would break away from the Union. Abraham Lincoln ran against Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell. Abraham Lincoln won this election.

    the South Seceeds After Abraham Lincoln won the election, South Carolina broke away from the Union. By Febuary 1st Alabama, Forida, Georgia, Lousiana, Mississippi, and Texas had too. Later, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennesse also seceeded. These states formed the Confederate.

    Fort Sumter The South attacked Fort Sumter Which was in the center of Charleston Harbor. the North was outnumbered 85 to 500. This battle lasted 34 hours. After this attack, the civil war had begun.

    Battle of Bull Run The Battle of Bull Run was the first real fight of the Civil War. All the Confederate troops retreated except for the men under command of General Jackson. Soon Confedeate reinfrocements arrived and they were able to push the Union back to Washington D.C.

    Battle of Shiloh Confederate troops attacked a convoy of Union troops moving through Tennesse at th Batle of Shiloh. The Confederates had the Union troops pinned down, but in the middle of the night, Union reinforcements arrived and the Confederates were defeaten the next day.

    Battle of New Orleans This was the first battle of the Union's campaign up the Mississippi River. The Union dropped artillery on New Orleans from their ships in the Mississippi River. The Confederates soon realized they could not win this battle so they surrendurred the city.

    Seven Days' Battles General McClellan started a campaign to take the South's capital. He took 100,000 men with him to take a peninsula. The South attacked McClellan and the Union was defeated.

    Second Battle of Bull Run The Confederate Army had 26,000 troops and the Union had 70,000. The supply depot was captured by the Confederates while the battle was going on. The Union surrendurred after being bombed with artillery from the depot that had been captured by the south.

    Battle of Antietam While the South was marching into Maryland, they met the North at the Battle of Antietam. This was the bloodiest battle in U.S. history. About 22,720 people were killed, captured/mississing, or wounded during this battle. The Union won this battle

    Emancipation Proclamation The Emancipation Proclamation was written by Abraham Lincoln. It said that that all the slaves in the South were to be freed. The South said that Abraham Lincoln had no controll over them so the only the slaves that were freed were the ones in states that were not occupied by the South. This document also allowed 180,000 African Americans to join the Union.

    Battle of Vicksburg Vicksburg was a town on the Mississippi river that stood in the way of the Union and had heavy defenses. The siege on Vicksburg lasted untill July 4th, 1863. When the town was surrendurred to the Union, the Union had split the south in half and the war would be a lot easier for the Union.

    Battle of Gettysburg General Robert E. Lee was leading his troops into Pennsylvania when they broke into a battle known as the Battle of Gettysburg. this was the largest battle of the Civil War. By the end of this battle, over a third of Lee's forces were either dead or missing. Because of this, the South was forced to surrender.

    The South Surrenders General Grant put a hole in the South's defenses. Soon after this happened, the South gave up at Appomattox Couthouse and the war had officially ended.
