Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth president of the United States. He was the first president from the Republican Party. -
Battle at Fort Sumter
Confederate troops attacked Union base, Fort Sumter, which is located in Charleston, South Carolina. It was not so much of military importance as it was a symbolic start of the war. -
Virginia seceded from the USA
Virginia was the first state to secede from the US. This put them at war with the rest of the country. -
First Battle at Bull Run
The Union took the victory, leaving roughly 900 confederate soldiers dead. The union army was lead by General Irvin McDowell, and the confederate army was led by Joseph E. Johnson as well as Thomas J. Jackson. -
Battle of Shiloh
This battle started on the sixth of April and ended on the seventh. Under the guidance of General Ulysses S. Grant, a union army moved into tennessee, then were atttacked by suprise by confederate forces led by Albert Sidney Johnston and P. G. T. Beauregard. The confederate army fell out on the second day, and the Union won. -
Battle of Antietam
This attack was led by the confederate army on the union. It was fought in Sharpsburg, Maryland, by the Antietam River, hence its name. This was the first major battle to be fought on Union Soil. There was no clear winner; there were 23,00 casulaties in all. -
The Emancipation Proclamation
This document presented by President Abraham Lincoln was on the topic of slavery, and declared all slaves in the rebellious states free. This made slavery the primary topic of the war, and made many slaves join the Union Army. -
Battle of Gettysburg
This battle is often referred to as the turning point in the war. A Union Army defeated the confederates who were trying to invade.
It lasted three days and took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. -
Gettysburg Address
The Gettysburg address was a two minute long speech given four months after the Union's victory at Gettysburg. President Lincoln talked about the Declaration of Independence, and honored the people who gave their lives at the Battle of Gettysburg. -
End of the Civil War
At the Appomatox courthouse, Confederation General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, thus ending the Civil War.
