    Abraham Lincoln being elected to president caused the southern states to secede from the union due to their fear that he would try to end slavery. In short, this event erupted into the Civil War.
  • The Confederate States of America is Formed

    South Carolina was the first state to secede form the Union. By February 1861 six other states from the lower south followed in their footsteps.

  • First Battle of Bull Run

    First Battle of Bull Run
    The confederates. led by: Beauregard, Joseph E. Johnston, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, left with the victory. This is considered the firts major battle of the Civil War.
  • USS Monitor v. CSS Virginia

    The USS Monitor was defeated, but it prevented the CSS Virginia from gaining control of Hampton Roads and thus preserved the Federal blockade of the Norfolk area.

    Known as the bloodiest battle in American history, there were more than 23,000 casualties. Grant overpowered Beauregard's army by 10,000 troop, forcing the confederates to retire from the battle field.

    Taking place in Virginia (close to Richmond).The Confederates won, forcing the Union army to reatreat from near Richmond.

    Also known as the Second Manassas, it was the culmination of an offensive campaign waged by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia against Union Maj. Gen. John Pope's Army of Virginia.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The single bloodiest day in the Civil War. There were a total of about 23,000 casualties.
  • Battle of Fredricksburg

    Burnside led wave after wave that was met with heavy rifle and artillery fire. It was a clear confederate victory. This battle had the largest number of combatants throughout the war topping off with nearly 200,000 combatants.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    During the third year of the war, Lincoln made this document to try to free the slaves from their owners. The document was unsuccessful in trying to stop slavery.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    This battle was considered to be one of Lee's greatest victories during the war. Lee attacked Hookers army and forced them to retreat, and also went on to attack and defeat another federal army. Thomas Jackson met his demise at this battle.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    It was the final major military action in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. It ended on July 4th, 1863.

    This war was the "deciding war" of who was going to be victor. Lee had to retreat his army back to williamsport. His trail of wounded soldiers stretched for 14 miles.

    The Gettysburg Address is a speech by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln and is one of the most well-known speeches in United States history. It stated why we need to be one as a country and it helped bring the U.S. back together.

    This battle was one by the union and was able to pave the way for Sherman to pursue his Atlanta campaign and eventually his "March to the Sea"

    Lincoln won the election over George B. McClellan. With his re-election, any hope of for a negotiated agreement with the Confederacy was gone.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    Led by Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, this campaign helped to capture the city of Atlanta, Georgia, on November 16 and ended with the capture of the port of Savannah on December 21.
  • Assassination of President Lincoln

    Abraham was watching a play while his security guard left his position and exposed Lincoln. John Wilkes Booth came out on the box and pointed a derringer at the back of his head. Booth fled the scene but ended up with a broken left when he lept of the box and onto the stage.

    Confederate General, Robert E. Lee met with Union General, Ulysses S. Grant. As a result, Lee surrendered to Grant, thus ending the Civil War.
