Nazi submarines bombed 6 small lake tankers off the coast of Curacao. -
Philip leaves Willemstad
Philip's mother decides to take Philip back to Virginia. They leave on the S.S Hato, a small Dutch Freighter. -
S.S Hato bombed
After a few nights on the baot the Nazi bombed it. Philip and his mother were hassled to the row baots on the side of the boat. Philip fell over board and was knocked out by something from above. -
Philip finds himself on a raft with an old man and a cat
A few hours later Philip wakes up on a raft and is face to face with an old man. The cat is named Stew Cat and is black and gray. -
The old man
The old man's name was Timothy and always called Philip "Young Bahss". -
blind!
After being on the raft for a few days, Philip becomes blind. Timothy tries to reassure Philip by telling him its only temporary. -
An island
A few Days after Philip goes blind, Timothy spys an island in the distance. Philip suggests staying on the raft and find an island with civilization. -
They arrive on the island
A few hours later they arrived on the island. Timothy takes a walk around the island and catches langosta for dinner. -
Timothy makes a hut
Timothy made a hut out of palm fronds and wood. -
A signal fire
Timothy decides its a good idea to make a signal fire. -
HELP!
Timothy asks Philip to spell HELP out into the sand so that he can make a Help sign out of rocks for planes. Timothy can not spell. -
A cane and vine rope
Timothy makes Philip a cane to help him move around better and makes a vine rope so Philip can make it down to the beach safer. -
Timothy teaches Philip
Timothy believes that his time is coming and begins teaching Philip some things. -
The fishing hole
Timothy fashioned some old nails into fishing hook and attached them onto a stick. He then showed Philip the fishing hole he found and taught him to fish. -
Climb the coconut tree
Timothy tells Philip to climb a palm tree for some coconuts. Philip puts the knife between his teeth and shimmys up the tree. -
The rifle cracks and preparing.
One day Philip and Timothy heard a rifle shot. Timothy said it was the sea and that a hurricane was coming. He rushed around the island preparing for the storm. He tied things down and put things in the palm trees. -
The Hurricane has arrived!
Well after dark the winds got stronger and the rain heavier. Timothy and Philip ran to the palm and Timothy tied Philip's hands to the tree and did the same to himself and stood behind Philip, sheilding him from the storm. -
The eye.
A few hours later the winds died down and the rain slowed, Timothy said the eye of the hurricane had arrived. In about 30-40 mins the winds picked up agian. They tied them selves to the palm again, after a few minutes a huge wave hit them and they lost conscious. -
After the storm...
After Philip woke up it was the next day. He tried to wake Timothy up but he wouldn't move. Philip untied the ropes from around his and Timothy's wrists. Timothy slumped back and moaned. A little while later Timothy said a few weak words and then rolled onto his stomach and went to sleep. -
Dead!
Timothy never woke up after that. Philip dug a grave and buried him. He said a few words of graditude and left to clean up the beach. -
Cleaning the beach.
Philip didn't know where to start, he had to build a signal fire and build the hut. He found some useful stuff washed up on the beach and fished in the fishing hole. -
Diving in the fishing hole
Philip really wanted some langosta, so he decided to dive into the fishing hole. He sharpened a stick and dived. He speared one and swam to the surface and pushed it off. Philip dived for about 30 more mins but found nothing. On his last dive he came across a deep hole, he came up for air and dived again. He stuck his arm down into the hole and something grabbed it. Swimming up to the surface he realized it must have been a morey eel. He never dived into the fishing hole again. -
An airplane!
Days later Philip heard the drone of an aircraft.He rushed to the fire pile and hurriedly made a fire and then began screaming and waving his arms but the plane had already left and could not be heard. Philip thought that maybe the pilot couldn't see the smoke. -
Black smoke.
Philip thought about what could make black smoke. Then suddenly it dawned on him, Sea Grass! The oily leaves would be prefect! -
Explosions across the ocean.
One morning Philip woke up to sounds of explosions. He realized that it must have been the Navy fighting the Nazi. He rushed down to the signal fire and quickly tried to make a fire, then he heard the faint sound of an airplane. Philip finally made the fire and threw in some sea grass branches. The plane looped back over the island and then looped back and the engine sound disappeared and so did the sound of the explosions. He wasn't rescued. -
Rescued!
Later that afternoon Philip heard the sound of a bell and mens voices. He jumped up and ran to the beach yelling, "I'm here, I'm here". A mans voice called out to him saying that he could see him. An other man took Stew Cat and guided Philip to the boat and the captain asked Philip questions. Philip told his story but he didn't really believe him. They left and Philip went to sleep. -
Back home.
The ship Philip was on brought him to Cristobal and was rushed to a hospital. His parents flew in from Willemstad on a plane. He was told that a piece of wood had hit a nerve in his head which had caused his blindness. Philip has to wear glasses to see again. He and his parents moved back to Willemstad. -
Philip's goal.
Philip decided that when he grew up he'd get a schooner and sail through the Devils mouth in search of the little island and when he found it he'd go up to Timothy's grave and say,"Dis b'dat outrageous cay,eh, Timothy?"
