    Holden says bye to Spencer
    Holden visits "old Spencer", his history teacher, to say goodbye to him. Spencer knows that Holden is getting kicked out of Pencey, and wrote him a letter asking him to come by. They talk about the amount of classes Holden is failing, and how he has gotten kicked out of previous schools. Spencer asks if Holden has any concerns about his future. Holden doesn't like that Spencer is trying to help him, so he makes up a lie to leave.

    Holden questions Stradlater, his roommate, if he had intercourse with Jane Gallagher after he comes back from a date with her. Holden used to hang out with Jane and still finds her attractive, because of this, they get in a fight with each other. Stradlater ends up defeating Holden and ends up giving him a bloody nose.

    Holden decides to leave Pencey three days early and packs his things up. On the train, he meets the mother of a fellow student that he finds annoying, but decides to tell the mother lies about how popular and well-respected her son is. After getting off the train, he considers calling a few people, but decides against it.

    While staying at Edmont, he decides to visit the hotel bar, where he is refused drinks because he is too young. He leaves the bar after being left a whole tab by a group of middle-aged women that he tries to flirt with. He recounts how he got to know Jane before heading to a club in town, where he meets Lillian Simmons, one of his older brother's exes. She invites him to comes sit with her and her date, but Holden makes up a lie, and leaves.

    Holden has a prostitute named Sunny sent up to his room for five dollars. After she starts, Holden realizes that he doesn't like it and makes up a lie to try and get out of it, offering to still pay. Sunny then insists that the charge is ten dollars, however, Holden still sends her out the door with five dollars. Sunny then returns with Maurice, the elevator operator, who beats up Holden after he still refuses to pay, while Sunny takes five dollars from his wallet.

    Holden looks for his sister, Phoebe
    Holden goes and looks for his younger sister Phoebe. He visits places such as Central Park, where he finds one of her schoolmates that tells him to go to the Museum of Natural History. He goes there, even though he knows she won't be there on a Sunday, further deciding not to go in when he gets there.

    Holden sneaks into his house to see Phoebe
    Holden decides to sneak into his house and wakes his sister Phoebe. He tells her how he got kicked out of Pencey, which makes her mad at him. Phoebe tells Holden that he doesn't like anything, even after he tries to convince her why he hates school. He also tells her about his fantasy to be the "the catcher in the rye" based on a poem he read, however, his sister corrects him by stating that he has the lyrics of the poem wrong.

    Holden and Mr. Antolini
    Holden calls Mr. Antolini, his former English teacher, who tells him that he can come to stay at his house. Mr. Antolini tries to counsel Holden on his future, but Holden feels sleepy and heads to bed. However, he awakes to Mr. Antolini stroking his forehead and thinks he is trying to make a sexual advance and decides to leave right away.

    Holden sends a note to his sister stating that he is going to leave for good. When Holden meets up with Phoebe at the museum, she is holding a suitcase full of clothes since she wants to come with him. Holden refuses and Phoebe gets upset refusing to talk to him. Phoebe follows Holden to the carousel in the park, and Holden buys her a ticket. It starts raining while Holden is watching his sister on the carousel, however, Holden is bursting with happiness from watching Phoebe.

    Holden meets up with Sally Hayes, a girl he used to date, and they decide to go to a play as well as ice skating. After skating, they get to a table where Holden urges that she should run away with him to another state, but Sally gets angry and decides to leave. Later, he meets with an old friend named Carl Luce to drink. Holden tries to get him to talk about sex like he used to do in the past. However, Carl gets annoyed with Holden's childish comments and makes up a lie to leave.
