  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    Plessy v. Ferguson was a case that made racially segregated but equal. The case gave a a broad interpretation of white and colored people. It legitimize the Jim crow practices throughout the south. As well the ruling stated that the 14th amendment to the U.S constitution dealt with political and not social equality. This is important because of this the next 60 years or so the whites will be living in hell due to the separate but not equal.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education
    The Brown V. Board of Education was a case that the supreme court ruled that segregation in public school was illegal. Therefore, schools were forced to integrate. As well Plessy v. Ferguson was overturned. This was important because it started the beginning of the ending of segregation.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

    Murder of Emmett Till
    Emmer Till was a teen from Chicago who was brutally beaten and shot by white man for whistling at a women.. The case became famous due to being a cause of the civil rights movement . The case obviously showed that the boy was killed for non sense reasoning. Therefore it was more of a discriminatory and unbelievable case. This was significant because whites could get away with lynching and now they couldn’t and had to face the crime .
  • Rosa Parks and The Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Rosa Parks and The Montgomery Bus Boycott
    Rosa Parks was an African American woman who was sitting in a bus and didn’t want to get up to give up her seat to a white man. She was arrested due to her not obeying the laws of being segregation between whites and blacks. Her case is well known because they started boycotting more in order to get equal rights. The significance was that more African Americans rose to the occasion and we started to see a movement amongst them.
  • Founding of Southern Christian Leadership

    Founding of Southern Christian Leadership
    The Founding of Southern Christian Leadership was a conference held with black ministers in order to successfully tactics. It consisted of MLK, Charles K, Steele and Fred L. Shuttlesworth. King was the president and this organization was a major force in organizing the civil rights movement. It was an organization that made progress through non-violence actions. It was important because it thought people to fight with non-violence.
  • Little Rock Nine and Central High School

    Little Rock Nine and Central High School
    The Little Rock Nine & Central High school was an event were nine black students were blocked from entering the school on the orders of the Arkansas Governor. The President Eisenhower sent federal troops to intervene. The students were being segregated in the school and weren’t let in class to study and whites were creating a huge mob of violence and threats to the policeman who were helping the students. This was significant was the brown v. board of education was being used.
  • Greensboro Sit-in

    Greensboro Sit-in
    This event happened in Greensboro were 4 black students began to do a sit-in a segregated F.W Woolworths lunch. They were refused service because they sat in the wrong side of the lunch counter and were arrested. The sit-in was a non-violence act were these students prepared for the worst to happen to them because of whites ,but knew that their protest would make a change and it surely did. It was significant because it lead to more sit-ins throughout the country.
  • Freedom Ride/ Freedom Riders

    Freedom Ride/ Freedom Riders
    The Freedom riders consisted of white and black Americans that felt they needed to do something about he current Jim Crow Laws. They traveled to the deep south and tested to see if the new supreme court decision were being enforced. This is significant because whites are risking themselves to make sure that a black person is getting their rights how they should be.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    The march on Washington was one of the biggest marches in the U.S history. This march was led by Martin Luther King a man who fought with non-violence acts and gave the famous speech of “I have a dream” that day. This march had a huge impact because more than 250,000 people joined and were united to end segregation and gain equality. They walked together through the streets of Washington as one. This was important because it showed the unity of the American people.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Freedom Summer

    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee  and Freedom Summer
    The Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee and Freedom Summer was a project made to register black people to vote. There were volunteers to help with encouraging people and one of them was Freedom riders, there was retaliation however from racist white people that led to some tragedies. This is significant because it showed how active the activist were for their cause.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    The Civil Right Act prohibited discrimination of all kinds based on race, color and religion. This allowed the federal government to enforce desegregation and prohibit discrimination in public. It as well abolished the Jim Crow laws In the south. It was important because movement was being done.
  • Assassination of Malcom X

    Assassination of Malcom X
    The assassination of Malcom X was a huge deal due to him being a black nationalist leader. He was a civil rights activist and he believed that if attacked they should be able to fight back with violence. He was as well know for his own organization of Afro-American Unity and the Muslims Mosque and as well the Black Panthers. His death was caused by an assassin at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan.
  • Voting Rights Act

    Voting Rights Act
    The voting rights act was passed in 1965 allowing it to make the process much easier to vote. This act was made to stop the literacy test, poll taxes and many more other requirements that were used to stop the black from voting and were made illegal. This gave more freedom to them and a bigger voice for them to finally be part of something that made them more equal.
  • Assassination of MLK

    Assassination of MLK
    Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated by a bullet while standing on the balcony of his room in Memphis Tennessee. The assassination of him really had a huge impact on the world. He fought for civil rights, he worked so hard to unite blacks and whites and his philosophy of non-violence fighting made a whole new prospective on how things should be taken instead of violence. Thanks to him and many others who had a voice contributed to a better future.
