    The Emancipation Proclamation officially ended slavery and when Miss Jane Pittman is told she is free, she decides to go to Ohio to find Colonel Brown.

    The Massacre
    On the former slaves' way to the north some of the Secesh soldiers found them walking and in their minds they're still runaway slaves, so they beat the former slaves that didn't hide in time. They either beat them until they were unconscious or until they were dead. Ned's mother and baby sister were killed during this massacre along with many other former slaves, so Jane takes Ned, Big Laura's son, with her on her journey to Ohio. Ned and Jane then leave.

    Jane Moves to A New Plantation
    Jane and Ned leave the scene of the massacre and move to a new plantation. Mr. Bone runs this plantation. Jane wants to recieve the same pay as the other women so she convinces Mr. Bone to pay her the same if she can do the work," I might be little and spare, but I can do any work them others can do."

    KKK Ned is involved with a committee that is dedicated to investigating thetreatment of former slaves, Ned is forced to leaeve the south because a group of men on horses, Who were most likely were the KKK because Miss Jane says," All had on their sheets." They went to her cabin searching for Ned.

    "That war ended in 1898. He came home that next summer. And a year later almost to the, day Albert Cluveau shot him down." Ned coming home is very significant because if he hadn't came home he wouldnt have been shot.
  • Ned Gets Killed

    " Cluveau shot him in the leg-the white people had told Cluveau to make Ned crawl before killing him. When Cluveau shot him, he fell to one knee, then got back up. Cluveau shot again. This time he tored off half his chest." Ned's death is the most symbolic of all the deaths in this novel. This is because the blood remains years after Ned is shot, and because of Albert Cluveau's death by the 'Chariot Of Hell' after the murder.

    " Mr. Cluveau when the Chariot of Hell come rattling for you, the people will hear you screaming all over this parish." The Chariot of Hell symbolizes revenge. If Cluveau didn't kill Ned, Jane wouldn't have placed this 'Hoo-Doo' on him.

    " We all killed him. He to make him follow rules our people gave us a long time ago." After Ned's death Jane moves to a housing development/plantation owned by the Samsons. A new teacher also arrives there and Tee Bob falls in love with her but is told he cannot be with her because she is part black. This event shows racial segregation.

    peace. "The Savior was there. He smiled down at me and raised a load off my shoulder." Miss Jane "finds religion" and is at peace. She feels less of guilt and the grief from all the recent deaths are taken off her shoulders.
