  • Treaty of Paris (French and Indiand War)

    Treaty of Paris (French and Indiand War)
    The singing ended the French and Indian War over in the colonies. Britian fights French and Indians over land. The treaty says that Britian gets all land east of the Mississippi, France has to give New Orleans to Spain, which end French power in North America.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    Parliament passes the Proclamation of 1763 that keeps colomists from settling wast of the Appalachian Mountians because the land belongs to the Native Americans. Colonists angry about law and many ignore it.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Britian wants to get more money and feel the colonists should pay part of the dept for the French and Indian War. Parliament passes the Sugar Act which places tax on sugar and other products shipped to colonies. This angers colonists who say that they shouldn't be taxed if the can't be represented in the Parliament.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Parliament passes the Stamp Act which makes all commercial documents must ccarry an official stamp htat shows the tax has been paid. This tax applies to all colonists, no just merchants. Colonists boycott British goods. Parliament repeals the Stamp Act.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    King George III wants to encroce the Proclamation of 1763. So he sends in soldiers and sets the Quartering Act in plae. The Quartering Act forces the colonists to house and provide suplies for British soldiers.
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    Parliament passes the Townshend Acts to raise money. The act suspends New York's assembly until colonists house British troops, and places import taxes on various goods. Britian uses search warrents to enforce act. Protests break out against act. Parliament repeals Townshend Acts.
  • Boston Massacure

    Boston Massacure
    A fight breaks out in Boston between British soldirs and colonists. Soldiers kill five colonists. Soldiers charged with murder and John Adams defends them. They are ruled inocent and set free and the incident becomes a symbol of British tyranny.

    Tea Act
    Gives Britian control over American tea trade and places tax on regulated tea. Boston Tea party dumps 342 chests in the Boston harbor. Britian wants men responsible brought to trial.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    Colonists protest the Tea Act throughout the colonies. The Sons of Liberty organize the Boston Tea Party. Then men desguised as indians board 3 tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea in the Boston harbor. Many colonists rejoice at news and Britian wants repayment and men responsible.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    Aggry about Boston tea party, Parliament passes the Intolerable Acts. The act closes port of Boston until colonists pay for destroyed tea, bans committees of correspondence allows Britain to house troops wherever necessary, and allows British officials accused of crimes to stand trial in Britain. Colonists angry about the act.
  • First Continental Congress Meets

    First Continental Congress Meets
    Deligates meet in at the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia. They vote to ban trade with Britian so that Britian might repeal the intolerable acts. They also call on colonies to start training troops.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Battles of Lexington and Concord
    British regulars are sent to capture and destroy military supplies at Concord. The British are attacked by Patriots at Lexington and the Patriots fall back. At Concord the Patriots force the British to retreat.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress
    Meets at Philadelphia. Delegates include: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Patric Henry, and George Washington. Delegates form Continental Army, appoint Washington as commander.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    American troops set up forts on Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill. British troops anvance on Breed's Hill and force the Patriots to retreat to Bunker Hill, then back to the mainland. Even Though the Patriots lost, they still felt a moral victory because the British suffered over 100 casualties.
  • "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine

    "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine
    Thomas Paine publishes the book "Common Secnce". The book arguses that monarchies are corrupt and disagrees with the economic reasons for remaining with Britian. It is a great success and strenghtens call for independence.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    Continental Congress chooses Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration. It states that the colonies are independent from Britain. It also sets rules for governing.
  • Battle of Long Island (Battle of Brooklyn)

    Battle of Long Island (Battle of Brooklyn)
    After the British retreated from Boston, Washington morched his troops up to Manhatten and Brooklyn and prepared for the British. Then after a lost fight at Brooklyn, Washington evacuated Long Island befor the British could attack again.
  • Battle of Trenton

    Battle of Trenton
    After crossing the Delaware River, Washington and his troops marched to Trenton where a group of Hessians were. After a brief battle, the Americans beat the Hessians. This victory inspired reenlistments.
  • Battles of Saratoga

    Battles of Saratoga
    British troops, led by John Burgoyne, face the Continental Army, led by General Horatio Gates, during mauch to Albany, NY. After several battles, the Americans, led by Benedict Arnold, force the British to retreat. Then they are surrounded by the American forces and surrender. The two main results of these battles are convincing the European countries that Americans can win battles and making Benedict Arnold angry about not getting any recognition and betraying the Americans.
  • Winter at Valley Forge

    Winter at Valley Forge
    After Washington and his troops retreat from Philadelphia, they spend the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge. About 1/4 of soldiers die from lack of supplies, food, and clothing. Citizens help porvide food and clothing for the soldiers. Though most soldiers stay for love of country and respect for Washington, some soldiers desert.

    "American Crisis" by Thomas Paine
    The "American Crisis" was a series of pamphlets writen from 1776-1783. Thamas Paine wrote these to strenghen the colonists confidence, stated the issues at stake in war, and dennounced negociating peace.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    Lord Cornwallis moves his British troops to Yorktown on Chesapeake Bay. French ships then block the bay preventing the British from getting supplies. Washington's troops and French troops combine to bombard Yorktown until Cornwallis surrenders in October 19, 1781. Britain then negotiates peace treaty. This is the last major battle of the war.

    The war officialy ends with this. The Treaty gives Americans independence, land east of the Mississippi, south of Canada, and north of Florida. alos Britain and Americans both agree to repay debts owed to eachother, British agree to return all enslaved people it captued, and Congress recomends that colonists give Loyalists their land back.
