  • Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts were passed by Parliament in response to the Boston Tea Party. The acts shut down Boston Harbor until Boston colonists paid for the damaged tea. This act made the colonists furious because they made their money trading in the Boston Harbor. The colonist decided to address the Intolerable Acts in Philadelphia.
  • First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress was made up of delegates, or representatives, from the colonies. It met in Philadelphia. The Congress was upset about not having representatives in the British Parliament. The First Continental Congress discussed complaints they had with Britain and created a boycott of British goods. They requested participation in Parliament.
  • Common Sense is Published

    Thomas Paine published Common Sense in order to persuade the colonists to declare freedom from Great Britain. He argued that a tiny island should not have control over a large continent and he called King George III a "royal brute." This propaganda piece changed many colonists ideas about freedom and they began to take up arms against Britain.
  • Battle of Princeton

    In Princeton, New Jersey George Washington led a group of Continental soldiers in battle against British forces. Washington and his soldiers emerged from battle victorious. The battle made British officials take the Continental Army more seriously. Continental soldiers were excited by their win and decided to re-enlist, which boosted the number of colonial soldiers.
  • Battle of Princeton

    In Princeton, New Jersey General George Washington leads Continental Soldiers in battle against British redcoats. The Continental Army emerges victorious. British forces learn that the Continental Army can defeat them! The Continental Soldiers begin to feel confident and continued to enlist in the army, boosting America's number of soldiers.
