The south feared if a Republican candidate won for president, they would loose their power of owning slaves because Republicans were abolitionists. This meant they wanted total end in slavery

    After the Union won the battle of Antietam, Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation. This document stated that all slaves in the confederate states to be freed on January 1, 1863.     On November 19, 1863, Lincoln said his speech at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Gettysburg Address was a speech that Abe Lincoln wrote in honor of the Union winning the Battle of Gettysburg.     The Union had already broke through Lee's defences at Petersburg. Then Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9. 1865 at the town of Appomattox Courthouse. When Lee surendered, it ended the Civil War Surrendering
