    Ronald Reagan, former governor of California, beat incumbent Presiden Jimmy Carter by a landslide.
  • John Lennon murdered

    John Lennon one of the founders of The Beatles, was shot by Mark David Chapman at the entrance to The Dakota, a building where he lived in New York City. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
  • American hostages released from Iran

    Minutes after the preidency passed from Pres. Carter to Ronald Reagan, Iran released 52 American hostages.
  • lauch of space shuttle Columbia

    This was the first flight for a reusable space shuttle.
  • Pope John Paul II was shot

    Pope was shot and critically wounded in St. Peter's Square at Vatican City, Italy. The man was sentenced to life in prison. The Pope went to the prison to tell the assassin that he forgave him.
  • Sandr Day O'Connor

    Pres. Reagan appointed Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court. She was the first woman to ever serve as a Supreme Court justice.

    Pres. Reagan announced the "Star Wars" defense plan, also know as the Strategic Defense Initiative. It was a system used to intercept missiles if launched at the United States

    Sally Ride was aboard the Challenger on flight STS-7 when she became the first woman in space.

    Madonna was well on her way to becoming a superstar.
  • Mary Lou Retton won 5 Olympic medals.

    Ms. Retton, a US gynmast won 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 2 bronze medals. She was 4' 11" and weighed 94 pounds at the time.
  • Reagan re-elected as President of US

    Pres. Reagan ran against Walter Mondale. He won 525 out of 538 electoral votes...the highest ever received by a President.
  • New flavor of Coke introduced

    New Coke called Coca=Co;a II hit the market, but was not well received; therefore the old flavor was re-introduced back and became what is still know as Coca-Cola Classic.
  • Hole in the ozone is discovered

    Three scientists from Cambridge University in England idiscovered a hole in the ozone layer over Anartica. This has impacted much debate.
  • Titalnic wreckage discovered

    A joint US - French expedition discovered wreckage of Titanic that went down on April 14, 1912 with 1522 people losing their lives. It was a vintage echo finder that was used to finally discover the wreckage 2.5 miles below the surface. It was found in international waters so a debate as to who owned the wreckage ensued.

    72 seconds into its flight it explodes plummeting into the Atlantic Ocean. Seven crew members were killed including first teache in space Christ McAuliffe.

  • First American case using DNA evidence in court.

    First used in the case of a man raping and impregnating his 13 year old daughter. Perhaps the most significant advance in criminal investigation since the advent of fingerprint identification is the use of DNA technology to help convict criminals or eliminate persons as suspects. DNA analyses on saliva, skin DNA testing is found to be highly accurate. The odds that the match is incorrect are 350 million to 1! This makes DNA tests the most accurate piece of scientific evidence a lawyer can have.
  • George Bush elected President of US

    republican George Bush beat Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis.
  • Valdez oil spill

    This occurred in the Prince Albert Sound in Alaska when an Exxon oil tanker on its way to Long Beach, CA struck a reef. It spilled 260,000 - 750,000 barrels of oil. It is considered the worst human caused envvironmental disaster ever.
  • Berlin Wall is started to be torn down.

    The official date of the wall bing toen down is Nov. 9, 1989, but actually took some time. People chipping away at the well were nicknamed "woodpeckers." Parts of the Berlin Wall were actually sold on=line.
