  • Period: to

    Viking Project

The Viking Project started being prepared in 1968. The spacecrafts was originally designed to function for 90 days, and ended up sending data back down to Earth for over six years. They were to explore Mars. Viking 1 lander was the first spacecraft to land on Mars, and Viking 2 lander landed on Utopia Planitia, which is a different area of Mars. Viking 1 and 2 launched in August 20th, 1975 and September 9th, 1975. They arrived in Mars in June 19th, 1976 (Viking 1) and August 7th, 1976 (Viking 2)
  • PIoneer 9

Pioneer 9 was launched on November 8th, 1968. Like Pioneer 8 it also collected solar radiation data.
  • Pioneer E

It was launched on August 27th, 1969. It failed because of the 1st stage hydraulics ignition was destroyed.

  • Period: to

    Hubble Space Telescop

NASA and European Space Agency got together and created the Hubble Space Telescope. Edwin hubble created this idea to have telscope in space. The manufacturing of this telescope costed 1.5 billion dollars. it is still working and it cost 6 million dollars a month to operate it. Hubble orbit the Earth. Congress approved of funding the telescope on 1977.
