  • Aug 3, 1492

    Christopher Columbus

    Christopher Columbus was trying to find a different route to Asia. He sailed with 3 ships,the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He landed in the Bahamas. He named the island San Salvador which means Holy Savior. He was nowhere near Asia but thought he landed in the Indies. He called the people he met Indians because of this. Later they realized he landed near the continent that became North America.

    Hernan cortez

    He sailed to the eastern Gulf of Mexico. He sank his ships and wanted to win no matter what. He destroyed the Aztecs with disease and posed as their God. He also won with superior technology. He sent much treasures back to Spain. He built on top of Tenochtitlan to build Mexico City.

    Panfilo Narvaez

    He started his expedition in 1527. Searched for Appalachee. He named a river Rio de las palmas. Found apalachee but they had no gold.
  • Nov 6, 1528

    Cabeza de vaca

    Went to find apalachee. He shipwrecked on a Texas island. He built a raft but got captured by karankawa. The karankawa made them slaves but he escaped. Famous for removing arrowhead from a mans chest.

    Francisco Coronado

    He was a 30 year old explorer who led a force of 300 soldiers and 4 ships. He wanted to conquer Cibola but had to fight Zuni Indians only to figure out that the city was made of Adobe. After failure he was told of Quivara by a Turk Indian. Again it was failure ant the Turk was executed.

  • Juan Onate

    He was granted the right to colonize and govern New Mexico. He led 500 men across the desert. Unfortunatly he didn't find any gold or silver. The lack of treasure made Spanish lose interest in the region so very few explorers entered the are over the next 80 years.
  • La Salle

    La Salle sailed in 1684 to find the mouth of the Mississippi River. He sailed with 300 men and 4 ships. He missed and landed in Matagorda Bay and 2 ships were lost. He set out to explore but got lost for a year. On his way back he got killed by his men and Fort st Louis got overrun.
  • Alonzo Pineda

    He was a conquistador. He explored the Gulf of Mexico with 600 soldiers and 5 ships. He encountered the Cortez but they were rivals. Cortez arrested messengers that he sent. he went back up the Mexican coast and established a settlement of his own.
