    Kabul, the capital of Aghanistan, falls under the attacks of the Taliban, led by Mullah Muhammad Omar (pictured). The city is now following a strict Islamic law implemented by the Taliban. Omar and his forces exile President Rabbani and execute former President Najibullah. Omar offers refuge to Osama bin Laden.

    This is the beginning of the Talibans control over Afganistan. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan was the new government out in place under the Taliban to impose strict Islamic laws. (Never had complete control. 10% of the northeast was held by the Northern Alliance.)

    Attack on Mazar-i-Sharif
    Wikipedia On the morning of this day, the Taliban began their violent attack against the people of this city. The capture of the city was needed to show the growth of the Taliban however the murdering of civilians has no clear purpose. Taliban drove up and down streets for 2 days and shot all people in sight. The alleged reason for this murder spree was ethnic differences.

    These 1000 year old statues of Buddha provided Afghanistan with a source of income (from visitors) even though it reresented another god. However it was later decided that all idols and images were against Islam. This lead the Taliban to carry out the massive destruction of the cultural symbols.

    Assassination of Massoud
    Two Tunisians disguised as Belgium interveiwers (allegedly Al-Qaida operatives) requested a video interveiw with Norhtern Alliance Commander Ahmed Shah Massoud. Hidden within their camera were small explosives which detonated during the interview. Massoud was rushed to the hospital however he died later that day.

    Otherwise known as 9/11, this is one of Americas most vivid memories of terrorism. It was later found that the extremist group Al-Qaida was responsible. Some people think that Al-Qaida is a seperate group while others believe they are a faction of the Taliban.

    World Press After a bloody loss at Mazar-i-Sharif, the remaining Taliban forces surrender and scatter. This event ends the reign of the Islamic Emirate of Aghanistan. Shortly after former Presdient Rabbani promises to restore order to Afghanistan.

    Wikipedia The Taliban executed another attack against civilians and the US when a suicide bomber was sent to Bagram Airfield. At this time US vice president Dick Cheney was in the compound and was the target of the attack. The bomb killed 23 people and Cheney was unharmed.

    Jan Mohammad Khan, advisor to President Karzai, was assassinated by the Taliban. The Taliban attacke Khan and another afghan deputy in Kabul.

    BBC Chairman of the High Peace Council of Afganistan was assassinated by suicide bombers. Rabbani was a key figure in the peace talks and negotiations with the Taliban.
