    Rough Rider at San Juan Hill

    Roosevelt resigned as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to form a volunteer regiment. "Roosevelt's Rough Riders" participated in two major battles, one being the Battle of San Juan Heights. He led a series of charges towards San Juan with his men. The American flag was eventually raised over San Juan Heights.

    Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1901 when President McKinley was assassinated. Roosevelt changed the way many people viewed the government. Before, the people were expected to do things for themselves and be overseen by the government. With Roosevelt in office, the government began interfering and lived up to the phrase "for the people".

    Coal miners were upset over low pay and long work days and went on strike to attempt to make a change. In the past, presidents had sided with the employers without much thought. Roosevelt, however, listened to the people and created a compromise that pleased everyone. This changed the way people looked at the government.

    The National Reclamation Act was put in place to collect funds for agriculture in the United States. Roosevelt declared that all funds earned from public land in a number of states would go to irrigation projects.

    This act restricted the railroad's ability to give rebates to companies shipping large amounts of goods. Heavy fines would be issued to those who dealt or accepted rebates from the railroad.

    Northern Securities Case

    The Northern Securities Company was a monopoly that began in 1901. Roosevelt took this to the Supreme Court, claiming it violated the Sherman Anti-Trust Act that forbids monopolies. In 1904 the company was declared in violation of the law and forced to dissolve.

    Roosevelt Wins First Full Presidential Term

    Roosevelt originally became president in September of 1901, when McKinley was assassinated. In the 1904 election, he won his first official term as president.

    While Yosemite was first recognized as a national park in 1890, it became federally owned in 1906. It is now protected by the government.

    This act was passed to regulate the processing and selling of meat. It established requirements for sanitary conditions in meatpacking houses and required the inspection of meat before it was distributed and sold.

    When Roosevelt was made aware of the unsanitary practices of many food production places, he decided to create some regulations. Roosevelt wanted to make sure all places processing, producing, and shipping food were safe and sanitary. Food also had to be labeled clearly, stating what the product was, when and where it was processed, and the nutritional facts and value.

  • Roosevelt Runs for Third Term

    Roosevelt Runs for Third Term

    Roosevelt is unhappy with what Taft carried out in his presidency, so he decides to run for a third term. However, the Republican Party picked Taft as their candidate. Roosevelt decided to create his own political party, the Bull-Moose Party. The Republican vote splits, leading to a Democratic victory.
