    Big Stick Doctrine Speech
    On September 2, 1901 Teddy Roosevelt first introducded is Big Stick Policy. He was speaking at a Minnesota State Fair when he said "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far,". This was only twelve days before the assasination of William Mckinely which would eventually thrust him into the presidency. Roosevelt's belief of peaceful negotians but a strong and threatening military was used throughout his presidency and made him a sucessful president.

    In 1902 the U.S. government decided on the location of the panama canal, it was to be in Colombia. The building of the Panama Canal supported Roosevelt's big stick policy because it allowed for the navy to move from one side of the country to the other easily and quickly.

    in 1904, roosevelt adressed cogress in the anual State of the Union adress. in it, he mentioned the Roosevelt Corolarry which added to the Monroe Doctrine to keep europe out of latin america to collect their debts. Otherwise known as "preventive intervention", it reinforeced the monroe doctrine, It said that America would go down to latin america and collect the european debts for them.

    In 1906, Roosevelt settled problems between France in Germany in Africa. The great nations were fighting over the area of morocco and Roosevelt was able to act as the middle man again and bring peace. Many believe that his actions may have delayed the start of World War I by a decade.

    In 1907 Roosevelt made a Genltemens agreement with Japan, banning all school segregation of Japanese but controling Japanese immigration inot California.

    Throughout Roosevelt's presidency he supported his Big Stick Policy by buliding the US navy into the biggest and most powerful navy in the world. In December of 1907 he sent the navy out on a world tour to show off the power of the American navy.
