Tectonic Plates: Sciencetist Theories

  • Dec 6, 1575

    Abraham Ortelius

He wrote many books of different Greek & Latin theories. He worked with maps & the movement of the Earth, he tried to explain many research in his books.
  • Nicolaus Steno

He decided not to believe in anything that the books said & decided to do most of the reasearch himself. He used geometry to show that contracting muscles change its shape but not the volume. He realized that there were rocks falling from the moon & decided to call them 'moon rocks'.
  • James Hutton

He created the theory of Earth or an investigation of the Laws Observable in the Composition, Dissolution, & Restoration.
  • Alfred Wegener

He created the theory of tectonic plates, providing a mathematical model for convection in the mantle explaining the movement of the Earth's crust.
  • Arthur Holmes

He performed the first uranium-lead radiometric dating (designed to measure the age of a rock). His theory was also part of the 'Continental Drift'. He thought that the drift was because of the thermal expansion in the Earth's mantle.
  • Dan McKenzie

He explained the movement of the tectonic plates & why they moved. He tried to explain to others what was happening by writing in his books & by also using other scientist's theories along with his. His result of his research was his first paper on plate tectonics.
  • Harry Hess

He advanced the 'Tectonic Plate' theory. He said that the Earth's crust moved laterally away from long, volcanically active ocean ridges.
