    The Complex Number Calculator is finished. In 1940, a man named Stibitz demonstrated the CNC at an American Mathematical Society conference held at Dartmouth College. Stibitz amazed the group by performing calculations remotely on the CNC using a Teletype connected via special telephone lines.

    ERA 1101 is built.
    Engineering Research Associates of Minneapolis built the ERA 1101, the first commercially produced computer. It held 1 million bits on its magnetic drum.
  • IBM with a large market share.

    IBM with a large market share.
    IBM had an 81.2 percent share of the computer market. In this year it introduced the 1400 Series. The 1401 mainframe, replaced the vacuum tube with smaller, more reliable transistors and used a magnetic core memory.

    The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) was one of the world's first operational packet switching networks.

    Hewlett-Packard announced the HP-35.The HP-35 distinguished itself from other calculators by its ability to perform a large variety of logarithmic and trigonometric functions, to store more intermediate solutions for later use, and to accept and display entries in a form similar to standard scientific notation.

    Adam Osborne completed the first portable computer, the Osborne I. The machine featured a 5-inch display, 64 kilobytes of memory, a modem, and two 5 1/4-inch floppy disk drives.
