    North American Aviation
    North American Aviation submits a prototype trainer aircraft to the Navy, designated XSN2J-1 to replace the SNJ. It was powered by a 1100 hp R-1830-78 Wright Cyclone with a three bladed prop. The aircraft top speed was 308 mph, had a service ceiling of 32,00 feet and a range of 1600 miles. Three aircraft were built but the Navy did not award the contract to NAA.

    XBT-28 Prototype Design by NAA for USAF
    NAA submits new trainer design to the USAF to replace the T-6 Texan. Using the XSN2J-1 prototype, they refined the design to meet USAF specifications, calling it the XBT-28. It was the first military trainer to have tri-cycle gear, was powered by the 800 hp Wright Cyclone R-1300 radial engine with a two bladed propeller.

    First Flight Prototype XT-28
    USAF Serial Number 48-1371 first text flight produced top speed of 292mph, service ceiling of 31650 feet and 800 nm fuel range. XBT-28 (for Basic Trainer) was changed to XT-28 because the USAF dropped it's sytem of trainer identification of P for Primary and B for Basic. The second XT-28 (serial 48-1372) also flew successful Contractor and AIr Force test flights.

    The USAF awards contract to NAA to produce 266 T-28A Trojans. The early T28A's had a disntinctive high canopy and a rollover pylon behind the front seat. Wingspan 40 ' 1"
