    He ran his first high school track meet at Roseburg Oregeon. He ran the mile placing 2nd at the meet known as the Indian club Relays.

    He set his first record of any kind, a state record, running a 2 mile time of 9:01.3 at the Corvallis Invitational in Corvallis Oregeon

    Aparently the Corvallis Invitational in Corvallis Oregeon is a lucky spot for him. He set a State record there in 1968. Then in 1969 he set a National High School Record running the 2 mile in a time of 8:41.5

    He ran a mile time of 4:06.0 at the Golden West Invitational held in Sacramento California. This time was the 10th best all time for a high schooler.

    At the AAU championships in Miami Flordia, Steve ran 13:43.0 for his 3 mile placing him 3rd in the all time high school times

    This was his first time running a race out of the country. He was in Stuttgart Germany and he ran 5K time of 13:52.8 placing him 3rd.

    Prefontaine was recruited by several top track programs across the United States, but decided to enroll at the University of Oregon to train under coach Bill Bowerman (who in 1964 founded Blue Ribbon Sports, later known as Nike)

    At one of the wierdest meets Pre ever ran he ran in He ran a dual meet in Durham Africa running a 5K time of 13:57.6 .He won the race because the runner who was way better than him,Yifter, on the 12th/13th lap thought it was the last lap and completely stopped, giving Pre a easy win

    Pre's one and only trip to the olympics was not all he hoped. Running a 5K time of 13:22.8, he ended up getting 4th. This was upsetting because all of this work and he didnt even have a medal.

    Pre won his 4th NCAA track title in the 3 mile running a time of 13:05.3 in Baton Rouge Loisiana. He is the only runner ever to win a NCAA track title all 4 years of college in the same event

    Pre's last race was at his favorite place to run ever, Hayward Field in Eugene Oregon. He ran a 5K time of 13:23.8..
  • Death to the Champion

    Death to the Champion
    Returning from a party, after dropping off friend and distance champion Frank Shorter, Prefontaine was driving east of the University of Oregon campus when his orange 1973 MGB convertible swerved into a rock wall and flipped.The overturned car trapped Prefontaine underneath it. Pre died instantly on the scene of the accident.
