Steps to the United States Entering World War II

  • American Isolationsim increases throughout 1930's

  • US passes the Smoot-Hwley Tariff Act

    to protect American industries from foreign cmpetitors - raised tariff prices. In return foreign nations raise their tarriffs against American goods.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt elected President

  • Congress passes a series of Neutrality Acts

    This first act banned the US from providing wapons to nations at war.
  • Neutrality Act of 1936

    Second Neutrality Act which banned loans to nations at war.
  • Neutrality Acts of 1937 - Cash and Carry Act

    Third Neutrality Act permitted trade with fightin nations in non military goods as long as those nations paid in cash and transported the cargo themselves. Known as Cash and Carry Act.
    FDR points out that this could lead to more aggression if we dont allow this.
  • Germany invades Poland

  • France surrenders to Germany. The Battle of Britain begins

  • Tripartite Act: establishs the Axis Powers between Germany, Italy, and Japan

  • FDR wins 3rd Term

  • Britain asks for help but is broke

    Prime Minister Winstin Churchill writes a letter to FDR where hs confesses that his country is near bankruptacy. "The momen approaches that we shall no longer be able to pay cash for shipping and other supplies.
  • FDR proposes bold idea

    FDR introduced a bold new plan to keep supplies flowing to Britain whoit any payment in return.
  • Lend-Lease Act

    Congress passes the Lend-Lease Act - Authorized the President to aid any nation whose defense he believed was vital to National Secutirtiy. Gives out more than $49 billion by the end of the war.
  • Hitler invades the Soviet Union: FDR sends supplies to the Soviet Union

  • FDR & Churchill meet secretly, sign the Atlantic Charter that joins the US and Britain against Hitler

  • FDR grants permission for US warships to attack German U-Boats

  • Japanese attck Pearl Harbor
