Istavan Csaszar is born in a small town near Budapest, Hungary.

He visits his Granparents who live in Budapest. Istvan is overwhelmed by the city, but loves visiting his family. His grandparents are very old, the reason for visiting them sooner than later.

Istvan begins to work in the family store, a small grocery business.

World War 1, also known as the Great War to the people who lived through it, begins when Istvan is only 12. He therefore cannot join the war effort, despite feeling very patriotic.Click here for more information about WW1

On Istvan 14th birthday, he sees a poster about America. He was intrigued by the idea of going to America, what it represeted, and how he could begin a new life there.

Istvan convinces his parents to go to America. His drive for new life and better money than in his dismal hometown also effects his parents. They all begin to make preparations to go to America.

Elise Island Tour Istvan and his parents arrive at Elise Island. While there he changes his name to Stephen, to sound more American. Part of his American Journey is complete - coming to America.

Stephen's family is able to open a new store in New York City. It is much more profitable. Stephen and his parent's are very happy that they moved to America, welcomed by it's freedoms.

Instead of working at his parents shop, Stephen is able to get a job as a dockworker. The sea reminds him of freedom, for he first time he finally felt free when he saw the Statue of Liberty while on the boat.

Stephen gets married to an Irish woman, who he had loved for several years after seeing her come off of one of the boats at the dock.

Stephen get's moved to Boston to work on the docks there, and he and his wife move to a new, lovely house.

Stephen and his wife have a beautiful baby boy. Stephen is very proud of his son's paitriotic birthday.

The Great Depression, a world wide sag in economy, affects America heavily. Fortunately, Stephen keeps his job throughout the depression, and his family is safe.

Stephen gets a lot of work once again at the docks because of the war. Fortunately Stephen is to old to go off to war, and his son is to young.

Stephen and his wife finally become U.S. citizens, a long held dream for both of them.

Stephen felt the need to help other immigrants, and therefore periodically gave donations to the Boston branch of the Children's Aid Society.

His son and his son's wife have twins, a boy and a girl.

Stephen retires at the ripe old age of 60. He feels very accomplished with his life, coming to America and finding his way to a new and better life than he was having in Hungary.

Stephen dies at the age of 70. He lived a long life, completing an amazing American Journey.
