    In the beginning of the 1900's countries were biulding aslliences and improving their armys. They were all climbing for power, and Europe was like a gunpowder keg. The was actuall stareted when a Serbian killed Austria-Hungary's archduke, Franz Ferdinand. Then Austria-Hungary declared war on Siberia.

    Trench Warfare & Treaty of Versailles
    Trenchs were built to protect soliders in battle. They were used in the Western Front in World War 1. They soilders could attack, counter-attack and defend with this new system of trenchs. They offered protection in exchange for mobility.
    The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty signed at the end of World War 1. It put restrictions on the Cental Forces. It was signed in Versailles in 1918.

    Overthrowing of Tsar Nicholas
    Tsar Nicholas was giving all of Russia's food and supplies to the war, and the people were left with next to nothing. Also the was an absolute ruler and the people didn't want an absolute ruler. So in 1917 they over threw Tsar Nicholas and USSR Lenin came into power. He was a communist.

    Communism was influnced by Karl Marx. It was system of government without classes and privately owned property. Everyone was paid the same amount of money, unless you worked for the government. The government held the money, so they had higher wages.
    Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union. He invented the command economy and believed in Communism. He was believed to have been a horrible leader. He has also killed thousands of people.

    The Twenties was a time of great prosperity in which people showed off how rich they were by buying things. In this time Jazz music and other new art forms became very popular. In the Twenties people lived fast paced lives.

    The Great Deprssion was a severe economic depression. It started with the Stock Market crashin on October 29, 1929. A Hooverville was a popular name for Shanty towns. They were a group or town of homeless people. Because of the stock market crashing, lots of people were jobless and couldn't feed themselves or their families.

    The Great Depression was a time of economic struggles. 1/4 of Americas population was without jobs. Many people lost their houses and went hungry. Many people lived in Hoovervilles or towns of makeshift houses. The Great Depression was a ten year world wide downturn of economics.

    Roosevelt's New Deal was government programs to help stop the Great Depression. Roosevelt started the 3 r's Relief, Recovery, and Reform. Relief for the unemployed and poor. Recovery for the economy to get it back to it's normal level, Last of all he would try to Reform the finacial system to prevent another depression.

    After WWI Germany went into a depression. They went hungry and needed a strong leader. From that Adof Hitler came into power. He was a very strong leader and great at public speaking. He then convinsed people to join forces with him and created the Nazi political party. Using threats and military force he took control of the lands bordering Germany.

    The Nazis committed some of the worst murders in World War 2. They tried to kill all the people who didn't fit in Hitler's image. They particularly hated Jews.The Nazis built concentration camps to hold Jews. They worked the Jews to death, or murdereed them on the spot. The Nazis killed up to six million Jews.

    On the morning of December 7 1941 Japan bombed the Naval Base in Hawaii. In just two hours after the first bomb, 2,400 Americans were dead, 21 ships had either been sumk or damaged, and more than 188 U.S. aircrafts destroyed. The Japanese had very carefully planned their suprise attack. After the bombing the U.S, declared war on Japan.

    After Germany surrendered Japan comtinued to fight. President Truman ordered to drop the first atomic bomb on Japan.The bomb was the most powerful weapon ever used. America dropped it on the cities of Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. It killed over 100,000 people. Japan surrenedered and the Allied Powers won the war.

    After WWII the U.S. and the Soviet Union were the two main super powers. The Soviet Union was communist and the U.S. didn't like that. So they posed many threats to the Soviet Union. At this time the U.S. and the SovietUnion were very tense.

    North Korea fought many hot wars in the Cold War. They invaded the non-communist country, South Korea. This was called the Korean War, The United States sent troups to help South Korea. China sent troups to help North Korea. They ended the war three years later in a stalemate. (Stalemate- An ending in a war where no one wins.)
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam had split in half. The north supported communism and the south was aginst it. The U.S. sent troops in to support the south in an effort to end communism there, but they were unsucessful. All in all, thousands af Americans died and millions of Vietnamese died. North Vietnam defeted South Vietnam and the entire country became communist.
  • End of the Cold War

    End of the Cold War
    The United States increased diplomatic, military, and economic pressure on the Soviet Union, which was already suffering from an economic depression. In the late 1980s, newly appointed leader, Mikhail Gorbachev introduced the Perestroika and Gasnost reforms. The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 ending the Cold War.
