    He was the youngest of 13 children was brought up by María de Garín, the local blacksmith's wife, after his own mother died soon after his birth. Adopted the last name "de Loyola"
    He was baptised at the Church of St. Sebastian. Basque village of Loyola where he was born.

    JesuitsSt. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), which was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540. St. Ignatius founded it with a twofold aim:
    1) to strengthen and where necessary to restore the Catholic faith in the wake of the protestant revolt.
    2) To preach the Gospel in non-Christian lands.
    The Jesuits grew to be the largest, most mobile, and most highly educated single religious order in the Catholic world. They founded colleges worldwide and established many missions.
