Ignatius was hit by a cannon ball in his leg during battle. He had multiple surgerys, but they were done poorly. He had to get part of his bone sawed off. This caused him to be in bed for many months. This is when Ignatius converted into Christianity. He was left with nothing to read except for two books, The Lives of the Saints and The Life of Jesus. He was inspired by these books and turned his life around. He realized that there was more to life when your living it for God.

Ignatius wanted to celebrate his first mass in the holy land, but was not able to get there. He celebrated it in the church of Santa Maria la Maggiore.
