  • Cricket

    Some people say that cricket was invented by children during the Saxon or Norman times living in the Weald. It was originally called a child game until adults started to pick it up in 1611. The first official game was played in 1844.
  • Boxing

    The first ever boxing match was held in 1681 when Cristopher Monck the second Duke of Albemarle arranged a match between his butler and butcher.
  • Baseball

    The first official baseball game was played in 1846 but it wasn't quite the baseball game we know today. It was actually a cricket game played with the rules of baseball.
  • Swimming

    Obviously, swimming has been around since water but the first swimming organization was created in 1837, and the first swim meet was held in 1864
  • football

    The first football game ever played was a college game in 1869. The teams were Princeton and Rutgers. The man who gets credit for creating the game is Walter Camp. In 1880 he created a set of rules that made the game more organized, structured, and safe. Now the game has drastically changed. There are more rules, more equipment, more popular, and so on.
  • Hockey

    The origin of hockey isn't very clear but a similar game to hockey is believed to have been played in ancient Egypt. The first organized game of hockey was played on March 3, 1875
  • water polo

    Water polo was created in 1888 and was played like rugby underwater. Now rules have changed and it is similar to handball underwater.
  • Basketball

    Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith. The first official game was played on December 21, 1891.
  • Volleyball

    Volleyball was invented on February 9, 1895. The person who gets credit for the invention of the sport is William G. Morgan.
  • Soccer

    Soccer originated from 19th-century England. It was invited to the Olympic games in 1904 which made it an "official" sport, but it was played locally before that.
