  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Brown v. Board of Education Court decision that paved the road for full integration of all students in public schools. This decision was the basis for future legislation involving the inclusion of children with disabilities into school.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia
    Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia Landmark special education case that declared that students with disabilities must be given a public education regardless of budget limits. It set the stage for a revolution of services based on children's needs, not on the schools’ financial capabilities to give such services.
  • Section 504

    Section 504
    Section 504 Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act set the stage for IDEA and ADA; it required disability accomodations in society and schools; and garanteed basic civil rights to people with disabilities. Regulations not released until 1977.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    EHA Required a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment. Students with exceptionalities and their parents became protected. Reauthorized in 1986 to include infants and toddlers.
  • Part C of EAHCA

    Part C of EAHCA
    Part C of EAHCA Full implementation of the program in all states on September 30, 1994. The 1986 amendments of EAHCA established the Early Intervention Program for Infants and Toddlers: assists states in developing and implementing a statewide, comprehensive coordinated, multidsciplinary, interagency system that makes early intervention services available to all children with disabilities from birth to age 3.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    ADA Legislation that prevents discrimination in employment, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications. It required phased-in accessibility in schools and implemented normalization across life in America.
  • IDEA

    IDEA
    IDEA EAHCA was renamed IDEA, a service exercising specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. Reauthorized in 1997 and in 2004.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    NCLB Legislation passed that required state schools to create standards with yearly testing. Students with disabilities are given alternative assessment.
