  • Brown vs. BoE

    This ended racial segregation in the American school systems, which was inherently tied to discriminatory prescription of SPED services to students that the school system was not interested in helping.
  • PARC vs. the Commonwealth of Pennslyvania

    This court case determined that students that all people were allowed to go to school no matter ability level, no exclusion of disability out of the school.
  • Mills vs. BoE of District of Columbia

    This court case determined that public school systems must provide adequate FAPE to all students that receive SPED services.
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

    This legislation created the umbrella of 504 that we have now to be able to offer at least some SPED services to those that may not qualify for a full IEP.
  • Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1990

    Provided the federal legal standing that we provide SPED services in the public school setting on today, and provides legal outlines for the procedures to be followed in ensuring a FAPE in the LRE as outlined on the IEP, which also has outline specifications in IDEA.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

    This is a general civil rights act that provides Americans with disabilities more protections under the law in a variety of circumstance, and affects are felt in the school system as it relates to SPED service provision and beyond.
  • Amendments to the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act of 1997

    Improvements to the already existing IDEA legislation in as to how it relates to the IEP process and fulfillment.
  • No Child Left Behind Act of 2001

    This is a national legislation act that was issued in to improve math cognition skills and literacy rates in special education and general education classrooms alike.
  • Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004

    Improvement to the IDEA legislation already in affect.
  • Edrew F. vs. Douglas County School District

    This determined that there must be a significant increase of the educational benefit that a student receives from the IEP program prescribed by the team evidenced.
