Civil Rights Act 1964
Prohibited discrimination based on race in Federally funded programs, public accommodations, and employment. This law set a precedent for legislation in the future for individuals with disabilities. -
Fair Housing Act
Amended in 1988 to include individuals with disabilities. It is unlawful to discriminate against a person when buying, renting, applying for mortgages, needing housing assistance, or any housing-related situation. Facilities have to make reasonable exceptions for individuals with disabilities and make access-related accommodations in their living space and common space. (Landlords are not required to pay for modifications). -
Architectual Barriers Acts of 1968
1st Federal law addressing Civil Rights for people with disabilities. Requires buildings constructed by the Federal government or with Federal funding be accessible to individuals with disabilities. -
Rehabilitation Act of 1973
1st Federal law to law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. It requires Federally funded programs to provide reasonable accommodations for their employees with disabilities. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act, PL 94-142
Implemented Free and Appropriate Education for all children with disabilities (FAPE). Schools are required to evaluate a child's special needs, develop an IEP for the child, involve the child's parents, and educate disabled children child along in the general classroom setting as much as possible. -
Hudson v. Rowley 1982
Ruled that IDEA requires schools to provide students with disabilities with a meaningful and appropriate education. This includes needed support within the classroom to assist the student to continue to benefit educationally. Students in today's society have so many technological supports and adaptive equipment to assist them in classrooms. -
Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA)
Implemented by the Supreme Court to ensure individuals with disabilities had access to travel by air. This law allows individuals with disabilities to fly safely and have proper accommodations. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Established the rights of students with disabilities to a free, appropriate public education in the most integrated setting as possible. Also, the Implementation of IEPs was introduced in schools. -
American Disablity Act
Civil rights law prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in various settings such as jobs, schools, transportation, and both public and private places that are open to the general public. -
Endrew F. v. Douglas City Schools
Ruled that high expectations must be set for the students and create goals that are ambitious and challenging to increase the chances of making meaningful progress. This law dispelled the notion that students with disabilities should be in schools that provide "de minimus".
