  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education

    While it does not completely relate to special education, the Brown v. Board of Education case helped for future purposes with special education. Brown v. Board of Education ruled that schools could not be separated by race. Later in time, that helped with special education by not letting students with disabilities be isolated (Timeline of the individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA) 2023).
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    This act called for federal funding for elementary and secondary schools for students in poverty. This also required access to education for all students (Timeline of the individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA) 2023).
  • PARC v. Penn

    PARC v. Penn

    In the Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) v Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the court ruled that students with learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities would be placed in public schools that me their needs. They would be placed after being thorough evaluation of their needs (Timeline of the individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA) 2023).
  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    After this hearing, it was made unlawful for exceptional students to be denied access to public schools (Timeline of the individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA) 2023).
  • Congressional Investigation of 1972

    Congressional Investigation of 1972

    At this time, Congress was trying to determine how many children/students with special needs were not being serviced properly. They found that out of the 8 million special needs children, 1.75 million were not even in school (Timeline of the individuals with disabilities education act (IDEA) 2023).
  • All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142)

    All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142)

    The All Handicapped Children Act guaranteed a free and appropriate public education for each child with a disability. This act also ensured that the rights of students with disabilities and their families were protected (A history of the individuals with disabilities education act 2023).
  • Public Law 99-457

    Public Law 99-457

    This law states that children who are born with disabilities must be provided with from the time that they are born. Before this law, they did not receive services until they were three years of age (A history of the individuals with disabilities education act,2023).
  • Public Law 110-476

    Public Law 110-476

    This law changed the name from EHA to IDEA and included traumatic brain injury and autism as categories of disabilities. At this time, it was also put in place that students will be provided with transition services after graduation (A history of the individuals with disabilities education act 2023).
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act

    This act was put in place for students with disabilities and students in poverty so they could have the same education and not get left out of educational opportunities because of their disability (Lee, 2023).
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act

    This law took place of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002. This act makes sure that schools provide a quality education for all students no matter the circumstances (Lee, 2023)
