    This legislation was started by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 as he was inspired by seeing his own sister grow up with an intellectual disability. This legislation created financial funding to better train professionals who work with children with disabilities as well as research better practices.
  • Public Law 93-112 Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act

    Public Law 93-112 Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
    This legislation provided equal access to services and programs for individuals with disabilities as they cannon be denied participation solely based on their disability. It also made the definition and protection for disabled individuals when it came to grades, suspensions, and chronic behavioral problems.
  • Public Law 94-142 Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    Public Law 94-142 Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act began as the government took on the responsibility for providing financial funding and resources for children with disabilities. It was set in place to “assure that all handicapped children have available to them a free and appropriate public education with emphasized special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs.”

    Public Law 99-457 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act ( IDEA)
    IDEA is an amendment to what was formally called The Education for All Handicapped Children Act. It gave federal funds to states to create programs for children starting at birth rather than just school aged children. This legislation started the idea that students should receive an education that is individualized to their personal needs (these plans are called Individual Education Plans).

    Public Law 107-110 No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
    No Child Left Behind not only influences children with disabilities but all children. NCLB requires schools to document their effectiveness on helping children be at a certain intellectual level by a certain grade as it holds them accountable by controlling their funds. Some see it as unfair as children with disabilities may not be able to reach these standards at no fault of their own or their teachers.

    Addressed increase in quality of personnel working with disabled people, increased IEP standards, and required transition services by age 16 or younger.
