  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The U.S. Supreme Court declared that separating children by race in schools was unconstitutional. It ruled in favor of ending racial segregation in schools, overruling the "separate but equal" principle set in 1896.
  • Civil Rights Act

    It was the first disability civil rights law to be enacted in the United States. It prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in programs that receive federal funding. Section 504 helps protect children and adults with disabilities from exclusion and unequal treatment in schools, jobs, and the community.

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This act required to provide equal access to education and one free meal a day for children with physical and/or mental disabilities. Public schools were required to evaluate handicapped children and create an education plan with the parents input trying to make it as close as an education plan of a student without disabilities.

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act replaced the Education of the Handicapped Act. It states that children with disabilities are entitled to a free appropriate pubic education. Each child's education will be planned and monitored with an individualized education program or an individualized family service plan.

    ESSA makes sure public schools provide quality education for all students. It tells states how to account for student achievement including disadvantage students. The students are divided into four groups; students in poverty, minorities, students who receive special education and those with limited English language skills.
