    Brown v. Board of Education
    Brown V. Board of Education is significant to the timeline of special education because it starts the progression of rights for people with disabilities. In this case, the U.S. supreme court stated that schools who racially segregated kids were unconstitutional because it violated equal opportunity. This is what started the fight for equality of all races, genders, and disabilities.(Alston, Russo, & Miles, 1994), (Esteves & Rao, 2008), ("The Right to Education", n.d.)
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    Was passed by Lyndon B. Johnson. This Act wanted to "improve educational equity for students from lower-income families by providing federal funds to school districts serving poor students." (The ABC's of ESEA, n.d.).This act is also the largest source of income for federal education.Since 1965, it has been re-authorized 8 times to make acts like Every Student Succeeds Act and No Child Left Behind Act.   • PARC v Penn Board of Education

    PARC v Penn Board of Education
    The Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) sued the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania because of a law that stated it was okay for public schools to deny access and free education to children who were not of mental age. The courts also found it unjust and made it so that the state would provide public education to ALL children ages 6 to 21.(Li, 2013)

    Mills v Board of Education
    Mills v. Board of Education expanded on what the PARC case accomplished in 1971. This case made it so no child could be turned away from attending public school because of their lack of money.("The Right to Education", n.d.)

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    This section of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires school districts to provide free appripriate public education and aids to anyone who has a physical or mental disbility. ("Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973", n.d.)

    Education of All Handicapped Children Act
    This act was put in place to help states protect the rights of an individual, meeting the needs of an individual, and improving the results of children and youth with disabilities.(Coates, 1985)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    This act prohibits discrimination agains individules with disabilities in all public areas. This includes jobs, schools, transportation, and all public areas. This act reflects that people with disabilities are just the same as everyone else.("What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?", 2018)

    IDEA
    The Education of All Handicapped Children was re-authorized to become what is now known as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This act improved upon things such as a students Individualized Education Program (IEP) and the team working with the student.("What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?", 2018)
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    This law enacted by President George W. Bush was to require kids to test in reading and math during 3rd-8th grade. They were then supposed to be tested again in high school. Students were expected to pass the state standards by 2014. This acts goal was "to close student achievement gaps by providing all children with a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education."( E., 2011)
  • Every Student Succeeds Act

    Every Student Succeeds Act
    Signed by former President Barack Obama, this act took over No Child Left Behind (NCLB). It gets the teachers, staff, and principles more involved with the students curriculum and allows the teachers to implement things that benefit students who donr fit inside the mould. This act also meant that there would be less testing with was not beneficial to children with disabilities becasue the tests didnt take their needs into account.(Álvarez, 2016)
